Today Catherine said, “I brought you a bikkie today!”
I was confused. A bikkie?
Bikkie is an abbreviation for “biscuit” (a biscuit is a cookie, which was very tasty by the way!).
In New Zealand English it’s okay to end words with an “ie.” See if you know what these words (Kiwi slang) might be:
- gummie
- hottie
- rellie
- scarfie
- sunnie
- wellie
- brekkie
- kornie
- mozzie
- sickie
- chrissie
- sammie
- brickie
- wharfie
- barbie (not the doll)
- pressie1
- cuzzie3
- chippie3
- pommie3
- tinnie6
- kiddie
- sparkie11
- reckie14
- flattie18
- possie21
Maybe they’re trying to put the “kiw-ie” in common words? Feel free to add to this list…
I brought you the bikkie as a pressie
Tena koe ehoa
Yep, here’s a new one for your list but an old one from my neck of the woods….
“choiceboidoidie”
Strickly speaking, hottie could be about a member of the opposite sex as well.
Ooh, and some more for the list:
– cuzzie
– chippie
– pommie
Kia ora, I haven’t heard that one before! Is that like saying choice, buddy?
And pressie, cuzzie, chippie and pommie! The list grows… it’s already long
Don’t forget tinnie ….
What’s a tinnie?
It has two meanings ….
1. A tin/can of beer
2. Weed wrapped in tin foil
I meant chippie as slang for a carpenter but french fry is just as good
Yikes! I’ll fix that… I thought it was a french fry?
Another one!
Sparkie = electrician
I don’t think I would survive NZ. Singaporeans are easier to understand!
Also, you MUST stop by if you are in Ohio! I will give you a buckeye and we can sing the Illini fight song. I keep hoping that you will surprise everyone and show up at Megan and George’s party this weekend….I’m keeping my fingers crossed. : )
Thanks for that one Craig, the list grows and grows and grows…
Jenna – I’d love to stop by along the way to D.C.! I won’t make it to the wedding party this weekend… I hope you have a good time. I’m jealous
Reckie (pronounced rickie) – Reconnaissance mission, usage “I’m just here on a reckie, to see if we’ll come here on holiday next year”.
Thanks Philip, I haven’t heard of that one either…
don’t forget of course the national thank you
chur chur
or is it chr chr?
i can say it but clearly not spell it
I’d prefer to hear that over the British “ta” any day!
Oh! You don’t have ‘flattie’ on the list and you’ve got two of them (your American friends may wonder what it is I know about you to know enough that you have two!)
Thanks OG
added!

Someone at work this morning said to me, “Looks like you’re in your possie,” which rhymes with mozzie and means position.
