Today Catherine said, “I brought you a bikkie today!”

I was confused. A bikkie?

Bikkie is an abbreviation for “biscuit” (a biscuit is a cookie, which was very tasty by the way!).

In New Zealand English it’s okay to end words with an “ie.” See if you know what these words (Kiwi slang) might be:

  1. gummie
  2. hottie
  3. rellie
  4. scarfie
  5. sunnie
  6. wellie
  7. brekkie
  8. kornie
  9. mozzie
  10. sickie
  11. chrissie
  12. sammie
  13. brickie
  14. wharfie
  15. barbie (not the doll)
  16. pressie1
  17. cuzzie3
  18. chippie3
  19. pommie3
  20. tinnie6
  21. kiddie
  22. sparkie11
  23. reckie14
  24. flattie18
  25. possie21

Maybe they’re trying to put the “kiw-ie” in common words? Feel free to add to this list…

Yep, here’s a new one for your list but an old one from my neck of the woods….

Strickly speaking, hottie could be about a member of the opposite sex as well.

Ooh, and some more for the list:
    - cuzzie
    - chippie
    - pommie

Kia ora, I haven’t heard that one before! Is that like saying choice, buddy? :)

  • 5 Jeff // Jul 10, 2007 at 2:21 pm

And pressie, cuzzie, chippie and pommie! The list grows… it’s already long :)

    Don’t forget tinnie ….

  • 7 Jeff // Jul 11, 2007 at 2:28 pm

    What’s a tinnie?

  • 8 Helen // Jul 11, 2007 at 2:37 pm

    It has two meanings ….
    1. A tin/can of beer
    2. Weed wrapped in tin foil

I meant chippie as slang for a carpenter but french fry is just as good :)

  • 10 Jeff // Jul 11, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Yikes! I’ll fix that… I thought it was a french fry?

  • 11 Craig // Jul 12, 2007 at 2:26 am

    Another one!

    Sparkie = electrician :)

I don’t think I would survive NZ. Singaporeans are easier to understand!

Also, you MUST stop by if you are in Ohio! I will give you a buckeye and we can sing the Illini fight song. I keep hoping that you will surprise everyone and show up at Megan and George’s party this weekend….I’m keeping my fingers crossed. : )

  • 13 Jeff // Jul 12, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Thanks for that one Craig, the list grows and grows and grows…

Jenna - I’d love to stop by along the way to D.C.! I won’t make it to the wedding party this weekend… I hope you have a good time. I’m jealous :(

Reckie (pronounced rickie) - Reconnaissance mission, usage “I’m just here on a reckie, to see if we’ll come here on holiday next year”.

  • 15 Jeff // Jul 12, 2007 at 5:03 pm

Thanks Philip, I haven’t heard of that one either…

I’d prefer to hear that over the British “ta” any day!

  • 18 Orange Girl // Oct 17, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Oh! You don’t have ‘flattie’ on the list and you’ve got two of them (your American friends may wonder what it is I know about you to know enough that you have two!)

Someone at work this morning said to me, “Looks like you’re in your possie,” which rhymes with mozzie and means position.
